Separate your subject from the background
A shallow depth of field is the preferred aesthetic for many photographers. Longer focal lengths (300mm and above) will often only let you open up to f/4-5.6, which might not sound particularly fast. However, at this focal length it is more than enough to make your subject sharp while keeping your foreground and background blurred.
