Serve up a winning shot with techniques from Wendy Evans
The fast pace of tennis means there are plenty of winning shots to be captured.
Summer has arrived, which inevitably means Wimbledon and tennis. Now you may not be able to get down to the All England Club to photograph the matches, but you certainly can at your local tennis court. The deciding factor in what lenses you need to use is the distance you are from the court. If you’re in the stands, a 35-50mm focal length will enable you to capture the whole court with both players in the middle of a point. There’s lots of depth of field with wide-angles, so if using a 35mm focal length with the players 30m away, an aperture of f/4 will mean everything 22m in front of the players, and everything to infinity behind them, is in focus. Even at a 50mm focal length, everything on the court will be in focus at f/4. If you’re on a local tennis court, you’ll need an even wider-angle lens.
