Digital FilmMaker  |  DFM issue 62
Filmmaking is seen as one of the major realms of the creative sector and because of that attracts lots of people keen to make their own mark. However, the new commercial produced by car manufacturer Lexus takes things in a slightly different direction. While it was shot by Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald the storyline and script were generated using artificial intelligence. It’s an interesting concept and one that provokes debate. Will it mean the end of human filmmakers though? Probably not, and for all of the computing power at IBM, which analysed 15 years of commercials and distilled the data to create a ‘perfect’ commercial, it still had to be directed by Macdonald. Have a look at our behind the scenes feature that’ll tell you all about it over on page 34. Elsewhere, the year is coming to a close and so it’s also time for our annual kit retrospective, which picks out some of our favourite hardware releases during the course of 2018. You’ll also find another crop of cool filmmaking projects, all of which have thankfully been produced by ‘real’ people.
