This month, we go behind the scenes at the theatre and Claire Gillo offers advice on the best cameras for low light
Best camera for low light?
I want to do more theatre and events photography and would like to invest in a camera that works well in low light. At the moment, I have an old DSLR that has seen better days, so I’m willing to go mirrorless and invest in a new system. What would you recommend?
George Heywood
Well, George, I’d start by looking at the Canon EOS R6 Mark II. This camera comes with a massive ISO range from 100-102,400, and IBIS in conjunction with lens stabilisation (up to eight stops, depending on the lens used). The sensor resolution seems a bit small at 24.2MP, however, this should suffice for most event photography and smaller file sizes can be an advantage in this genre as you’ll save on memory space. Retailing online around £1,999, it’s well worth looking into.
If you want more pixels, the Nikon Z 7II comes with a 45.7MP sensor plus fiveaxis IBIS so is another strong contender. This camera’s ISO range goes from ISO 64 to 25,600 (so not as large as the Canon above) but the quality of this camera is undoubtedly superb.
Another possible option to look into is the Sony a7 IV. This camera comes with a 5.5 stop, five-axis in-body image stabilisation system, which will help in low light, a 33MP full-frame image sensor and an impressive ISO range of up to 51,200. Retailing just over £2,000 online, this is another strong contender.
