CHASE OF THE WILD GOOSE
Mary Gordon
Before there was Anne Lister, there were the Ladies of Llangollen… In this historical novel, Mary Gordon recounts the incredible true story of Lady Eleanor Butler and Miss Sarah Ponsonby, two women who broke away from the expectations of 18th century Irish society to dedicate their lives to one another. Together, they built a home that would gain notoriety in their lifetimes at Plas Newydd, Llangollen, north Wales. (They even show up in the diaries of our Gentleman Jack, who visited to pay respects – beacons of the abiding love between two women that they were.) Originally published in 1936 by Hogarth Press, Chase Of The Wild Goose is back in print this month from Bristol-based independent press Lurid Editions, which will be reprinting 20th century books that “refuse to fit in”.
