Unless you’ve ever met an astronaut, “What do you do?” is usually a dull way of starting a conversation with someone. The vast majority of people have jobs that are tedious to do, and even more tedious to explain. This, of course, doesn’t make them tedious people. But with the seemingly necessary evil of “What do you do?” we coerce others into defining themselves by how they pay their bills, in a world that forces us to do increasingly hardto- explain things to make money.
