Landmarks and buildings related to queer historical figures are being listed as part of Historic England’s innovative research project, Pride of Place.
Already listed Grade II* for its architectural importance, Shibden Hall’s listing has been updated to record one resident’s significance as a lesbian trailblazer. Dubbed “the first modern lesbian”, Anne Lister kept coded diaries recording her romantic and sexual relationships with women. She inherited Shibden Hall from her uncle in 1836 and lived there for several years with her partner, Ann Walker.
