For the show’s first alternative universe, writer Don Houghton conjures a terrifying republic: casual mention of the royals’ execution, “Unity Is Strength” and a full-on spotlight interrogation. As dark mirrors of the UNIT team we’ve come to know and trust, Caroline John, Nicholas Courtney and John Levene relish their bad-guy turns. It’s especially unsettling to see the Doctor out of his depth, fathoming the rules of free will – before the unthinkable happens, and the world dies in flames.
