EXPERIMENT
Internet Roadtrip

Neal Agarwal’s latest interactive project has been live for a few months, but the fact that it’s still going arguably makes it more interesting to sample now than when it began. Roadtrip charts a slow car journey across North America, seen through the eyes of Google Street View. Its route is determined by whoever is online at any given time, voting once every ten seconds on the direction the car will take next. At times, that results in squiggly lines across the minimap as groups disagree, but the game’s chat box is often active with ‘navigators’ doing their best in trying to corral the mob, while an accompanying Discord community discusses long-term plans. As we write this, the car is in Canada – it hasn’t taken long for players to escape across the border.
