has been shrouded in secrecy. What can you tell us about it?
Well, Michel Gondry and I set out to make this film about this neighbourhood with a lot of public housing. Usually, when you hear about public housing, at least in America, it’s seen as the slums, and it’s run-down and it’s downtrodden. It’s so heavy. You don’t realise that that is an outside-in perspective, mostly. There are some sad stories to be told from the perspective of people coming from those places, but most of the time, the rest of the world and the rest of society looks down on those communities. So here is a film about hope and joy. We wanted to tell the other side of what it’s like. Because for me, sure, there was crime in the neighbourhood —but there was also loads and loads of creativity. Inspiration was everywhere. It was in the air. It was in the air as thick as humidity.
