“HEY, CHRISTIAN!” James Watkins, sitting in an office with a whiteboard of ideas behind him, beams through the screen. “Hey, James,” responds Christian Tafdrup, Zooming in from his phone, pacing around his Copenhagen apartment. What’s this? The director of Speak No Evil (2022) having a jolly old chinwag with the director of Speak No Evil (2024)? Have timelines clashed? Is the Danish filmmaker not incensed that Blumhouse remade his film but two years later? Why the hell are these guys being so damn friendly?
Blame Empire. Having loved both films, we took a shot at getting them together for a joint autopsy. Turns out they’ve been mutual admirers for some time. “We’re both drawn to this sort of material,” reasons Watkins. Sickos.
