Jean Coene, the so-called ‘Master of the Paris Entries’, was a prolific 16th century painter of miniatures who was active in Paris for the French court under Louis XII and Francis I.
This c.1510–20 illuminated leaf from a Book of Hours is attributed to Coene’s workshop. The animal-vellum leaf features 22 lines of handwritten gothic text, a large, liquid gold D and a panel border of geometric shapes filled with acanthus and floral motifs, including red roses (the symbol of martyrdom) and columbine (the symbol of the holy spirit).
It is priced at £495 from London dealership Ancient Art.
