HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH
BELINDA CARLISLE
(VIRGIN)
Belinda Carlisle had already been in the pop biz 10 years before hitting big with Heaven Is A Place On Earth. Though she’d released a trio of Go-Go’s albums and one solo long-player (1986’s Belinda), chart success in the UK had somehow eluded the Hollywood-born vocalist. This fi rst single from sophomore album Heaven On Earth would change all that, topping the hit parades in Britain, the US, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, New Zealand, Norway and South Africa. The Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley-penned number boasted a starry line-up, with The Mamas & The Papas’ Michelle Phillips and songwriter Diane Warren on backing vocals and techno boffin Thomas Dolby on synths. Shipley and Knowles would go on to write several other songs for Carlisle, including Circle In The Sand and Leave A Light On.
