The Frankies are a great example of the short but perfectly formed phenomena, the interlude. Everyone remembers their cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Born To Run from Welcome to The Pleasuredome as much for the spoken work interlude that’s placed just before it (and just after their cover of Ferry Cross The Mersey) as for its bare-faced and raucous take on a rock standard.
It’s an untitled, fly-on-the-wall skit about a Liverpudlian factory worker (voiced by Paul Rutherford) turning up for work in the morning. Paul: “I’m sorry I’ve left my card at home.” His boss: “Well, you’re late as well. That’s three times on the run. If you’re late again, the supervisor said we’re going to put you on daily signing!”
