THE LAST WORD
The Duke of Northumberland has chosen this painting by Landseer as his all-time favourite piece of sporting art.
Sir Edwin Landseer certainly knew how to make an artistic statement and produced some monumental paintings like The Monarch of the Glen. He was an immensely gifted artist who covered a range of subjects and could, apparently, paint with both hands at the same time. Although known for his paintings, he was a fine sculptor and was responsible for the lion sculptures at the base of Nelson’s Column.
