Fly Fusion

Fall 2024 THE RISE OF THE OCTOBER MAYFLY Skip Morris All mayflies are interesting to fly fishers, each in its particular ways. The Blue-Winged Olive is certainly as captivating as any. When I think of Blue-Wings, and I picture trout sipping down the duns and emergers that ride the churning currents at the heads of pools and the smooth winding threads of current of softer water, I think first of October. GRAND TROUT LESSONS Derek Bird Perspective, I remind myself, that’s why I do this. Moving beyond the familiar enables me to learn more by broadening my perspective. For example, whenever I struggle to move beyond conflicting thoughts I play a little game of mental gymnastics. When I travel to new places and fish new rivers, I’m faced with a new set of variables so I’m forced to return to the role of learner and observer. THE SIMILKAMEEN Aaron Goodis The river is a beautiful trout stream that starts at Nordheim Peak, on the east flank of Manning Park. It flows for approximately 198 kilometers, past small towns such as Princeton and Keremeos, eventually flowing into the Okanagan River, then across the border into the United States. STREAMERS FUNKY & SIMPLE Jeremy Davies Over the past few years, there is a growing trend in fly shops toward nymphs and streamers tied with unusual colours such as blue, orange, chartreuse, or bright yellow. If asked, shop staff will tell you that a nymph with a bright orange hotspot often works more effectively than nymphs in natural colours. Check out our take on five new streamer patterns, perfect for fall use, featuring new colours proven to be effective on the water. And much more!
