FlyPast  |  August 2015
The brand new August issue of FlyPast features two of the great ‘heavyweights’ of World War Two on the cover. The Boeing B-29 Superfortress and Consolidated B-24 Liberator both contributed significantly to final victory. We speak to the pilots of two of these awe-inspiring machines, and reflect on their use in the conflict in a special section to mark the 70th anniversary of the war’s end.
HURRICANE SPOTLIGHT
Our in-depth Spotlight section focuses on a legend of the Battle of Britain, the Hawker Hurricane. Featuring exclusive artwork, we look back on the history of this essential fighter, and examine a few of its various other roles in wartime.
SPITFIRE-TYPHOON TRIBUTE
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the RAF are flying a Spitfire with a uniquely painted Eurofighter Typhoon this year to commemorate The Few. We visit Coningsby to get a close look at the machines in question.
BIGGIN HILL CLASSIC REBORN
Photographer John Dibbs goes air-to-air with a beautifully restored Supermarine Spitfire Vc that has flown recently from famous wartime airfield Biggin Hill.
ENGLISH ELECTRIC – GODS OF THUNDER
Ken Ellis profiles the men behind the incredible English Electric Lightning and the long-lived Canberra.
MUSTANGS IN THE MIDLANDS
A L Palenski presents rarely seen images of P-51D Mustangs serving with the USAAF’s Midland-based 20th Fighter Group.
We also visit spectacular airshows both in the UK and in the States, along with an unusual Cold War-themed night photography event at Bentwaters Museum. Plus, we bring you news of a Hawker Hurricane that is now flying in Germany, an FW 190 that’s airborne in the US, and celebrate 25 years of Duxford-based operator Classic Wings.
