FlyPast  |   June 2019
The June issue of FlyPast features a legendary British jet from the Cold War - and beyond - on its cover: the distinctive English Electric Canberra. Remarkably, the prototype first flew 70 years ago, so to mark this anniversary we present a series of features celebrating the long-lived machine, which was only retired from RAF hands in 2006. We reflect on all the main variants of the type and list the units that put it to use.
Italian stallion
Our extensive Spotlight section focuses on an often-overlooked jet - the Italian-designed Fiat G.91. Our features include some previously unpublished images alongside exclusive reports and artwork.
In the army now
Middle Wallop’s Army Flying Museum has opened its doors to the public following refurbishment. Jamie Ewan reports.
Atlantic pioneers
To mark its centenary, Robin Evans charts Alcock and Brown’s daring non-stop flight across the Atlantic.
Flying the Yale
Darren Harbar describes Europe’s sole airworthy North American Yale and speaks to its owner about new plans for the historic trainer.
Junkers in action
Luftwaffe historian Chris Goss reveals the history of the Ju 188, Junkers’ intended replacement for the successful Ju 88.
We also look forward to Newark Air Museum’s CockpitFest and report from a warbird event in California, while Ian Wilson presents a portfolio of images showcasing wartime activity at Hawkinge. Elsewhere, we report from the superb Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum on Ford Island, Hawaii, and Marcelo Ribeiro marks the 50th anniversary of the US Navy’s iconic air combat training squadron - Top Gun - by exploring its formative years. Also, look out for news of a BBMF Spitfire in new markings and a recently re-flown P-63 Kingcobra.
