FlyPast  |   September 2018
The bumper, 132-page September issue of FlyPast features an icon of classic aviation on its cover, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s Avro Lancaster B.X. Often nicknamed ‘VeRA’, the four-engined bomber is one of only two airworthy Lancasters in the world and is currently flying in a temporary Dambusters-themed livery to mark the 75th anniversary of the legendary raid. Eric Dumigan looks back on this famous aircraft’s history, with new air-to-air images by Mike Reyno.
Messerschmitt Bf 109 Spotlight
Our in-depth Spotlight section focuses on the fearsome Messerschmitt Bf 109, with an emphasis on the early ’109E variant that served during the early years of World War Two, including the Battle of Britain. We include exclusive artwork, archive images and brand new features on this fabled type.
Flying Legends
FlyPast lensman Darren Harbar presents images from July’s two-day warbird spectacular at Duxford.
Star-spangled Spitfires
American fighter pilots first went to war in Europe in Spitfires. Warren E Thompson relates the experiences of the 31st Fighter Group.
Flying the Harvard
Duxford-based Classic Wings has acquired a new Harvard for passenger flights. FlyPast’s new editor Chris Clifford dons his flying suit to take a spin.
RAF Museum
London’s RAF Museum has re-opened after significant redevelopment. We get the lowdown from museum boss Maggie Appleton.
We also detail the incredible wartime career of fearless Polish ace Eugeniusz Nowakiewicz, and Darren Harbar reflects on the history of DHC Chipmunk WP903, a trainer that has been flown by three members of the Royal Family. As usual, Darren goes air-to-air with the crimson ‘Chippie’, capturing some stunning images. We also include a visit to the packed Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Canada, pay tribute to the courage of Victoria Cross recipient Ferdinand ‘Freddie’ West, and bring you news of a restored Lockheed Starfighter’s first airshow display.
