IN THIS COLUMN, I’d like to focus on the intro rhythm part from the song “Gainesville Station,” from my latest record, Soul Shifter. Guitarist Steve Gaines from Lynyrd Skynyrd was a big inspiration for me when I was a kid, and I wrote this song as a tribute to his incredibly soulful playing style. Steve, as many of you know, was tragically killed in the band’s plane crash in 1977. I took some of that mojo inspiration that I got from him and did my best to inject it into this song.
