Does anyone eat better than professional athletes? Arguably not; nutritionists and chefs ensure every bite keeps them in perfect condition. It’s interesting, then, more sports people are going vegan. Forest Green Rovers, the world’s first fully vegan football club, has been promoted to the Football League for the first time in its history, and they’re in good company; the Williams sisters favour a plant-based diet, GB hockey striker Alexandra Danson is vegan, and cyclist Lizzie Armitstead hasn’t eaten meat since she was 10. The number of British vegans has shot up by 360 per cent in 10 years, and concerns about lacking key nutrients are history. ‘As long as you eat a diverse diet, you’ll get enough protein,’ says Adam Stansbury, aka The Plant Powered PT. ‘Combine a bean, legume or pulse with a grain such as quinoa, buckwheat or brown rice, four or five different coloured vegetables and a blend of different oils and spices.’ Easy.
