EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
DOUBLE GRAMMY WINNER GREGORY PORTER
ON KINDNESS, CANCELLED CONCERTS AND HIS BROTHER’S UNTIMELY DEATH
INTERVIEW: SALLY MORGAN
’The most vibrant, interesting, cool person I’ve ever known is gone’
There’s no mistaking those distinctive velvety tones or his trademark “jazz hat” when Grammy-winning singer Gregory Porter talks to HELLO! via Zoom from his home in California.
”I’ve been following the rules, I’m isolating”, says the 48-year-old star, who, after the release of his new album All Rise, is hunkering down with his wife Victoria and their seven-year-old son Demyan.
Surrounded by fields stretching for miles, Gregory’s beautiful home – which features a swimming pool, an artist’s studio and a dining room with a table so large it can accommodate his siblings and their families – couldn’t be more different from his humble childhood home a stone’s throw away.
”I have my space and Victoria, who’s an artist, has her studio on the other side of the house, yet despite having 2,000 square feet and two acres between us, we all tend to congregate in the smallest room – my study”, he says.
”My wife’s a beautiful painter. She has a series called Black Angels – regular, everyday people who she considers to be angels. She sees the beauty in everyone.”
