As one of Britain’s best-loved rugby league stars, who was hailed an “inspiration” by former RFL patron the Duke of Sussex, Rob Burrow has always prided himself on beating the odds.
Now, as he faces the biggest challenge of his life, battling motor neurone disease (MND), the father of three is adopting the same gritty attitude he showed during his extraordinary career - and is planning a trip to Buckingham Palace after being honoured with an MBE in the New Year Honours list.
When HELLO! meets Rob, his wife Lindsey and children Macy, nine, Maya, five, and twoyear- old Jackson, the determination that took him to the top of his game is very much in evidence as he fights the incurable degenerative condition, which affects the brain and nerves and has robbed him of his voice and mobility.
“From the moment I was diagnosed, I decided I was going to tackle this disease headon and that’s what I am doing,” he says at the family home in Yorkshire for our exclusive interview. “I love my family too much to give up and I will keep fighting until my last breath.”
