A ROUND-UP OF NEWS REPORTS
THE QUEEN
Rules the words of 2022
The word “queen” has been voted children’s word of the year for 2022. After surveying more than 4,000 children aged six to 14 about their favourite word, Oxford University Press shortlisted the three most common answers for a further 1,000 children to choose from. Almost half of those surveyed chose “queen” as their top choice. In second place was “happy” with 36% of the votes followed by “chaos” with 14%.
Helen Freeman, director of Oxford Children’s Books, said the revelation comes as “no surprise”. “This not only reflects Her Majesty’s 70 years of incredible service, but over the past decade our research consistently reveals how attuned children are to the news and the impact current affairs have on their language,” she said.
