When Shiza Shahid was ayoung girl growing up in Pakistan, her mother was determined that she should keep out of the kitchen and instead pursue the education that was being denied to most of her peers.
It is somewhat ironic, then, that Shiza, 34, has far surpassed her parents’ hopes by making her fortune with one of the most covetable kitchenware brands on the market, Our Place, which has been lauded by celebrity fans including Oprah Winfrey, Cameron Diaz and Selena Gomez.
And founding the brand, which is ubiquitous on social media, isn’t even Shiza’s greatest achievement. Ten years ago, she co-founded the Malala Fund, which raises money to invest in girls’ education, with Nobel Peace Prize- winning activist Malala Yousafzai after working as an advocate for women in Pakistan.
‘Girls’ education remains a critical issue. We’re making progress but we need a lot more support’
Success with her kitchenware brand Our Place has not dimmed Shiza’s enthusiasm for activism, having worked closely with Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai (together above) on her fund
