She famously played Miranda Priestly, the fictional version of Dame Anna Wintour, in The Devil Wears Prada.
So it was a surreal thrill to see Meryl Streep sitting in the front row at Milan Fashion Week’s Dolce & Gabbana show, flanked by her co-star Stanley Tucci, who plays Nigel Kipling, and Simone Ashley, who has joined the original cast for next year’s sequel. At one point, Meryl even came face to face with the woman she portrayed in the 2006 film. Would it be a case of handbags at dawn, or hugs? Happily, it was the latter, with the two legends warmly greeting each other as the actress proved that the devil also wears Dolce in a glossy beige, patent leather trench coat, while Anna wore a floral dress. Let’s hope that Meryl, in keeping with her on-screen alter ego, refrained from uttering one of her most famous lines: “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.” Meryl and Stanley remained in character during the presentation, exchanging glances as models took to the catwalk. It was later confirmed that the scene would be included in The Devil Wears Prada 2, which has been shooting in and around Italy’s fashion capital.
