This North American hornet has white markings on its head and the tip of its abdomen. Despite being known as a hornet, it’s more closely related to yellow jacket wasps than other hornet species. They’re known to spray venom into the eyes of animals they’re threatened by. Sometimes the size and shape of this species means it’s also mistaken for a bee. Their nests can be as large as a basketball.
