HOW TO…Practical projects to try at home
MAKE A THERMOMETER
Record changing temperatures and discover thermal expansion with this home-built apparatus
1 GATHER YOUR MATERIALS Lay out your materials ready for the experiment. The narrower the straw, the more accurate your thermometer will be in measuring small temperature fluctuations.
2 MARK THE STRAW Take your straw, ruler and permanent marker. Line the ruler up next to the straw and mark a line at centimetre and half-centimetre intervals along the straw.
3 ROLL A BALL Roll a small ball of modelling clay between your palms, then flatten it against a table so that it has two flat surfaces.
