URING THE Crimean War the best part of 200 years ago a British brigade, on horseback, following orders, charged into Russian and Turkish forces only to be decimated within minutes; that outcome, immortalised and glorified in poetry, was as inevitable as the hundreds of thousands of unnecessary, avoidable deaths over the top of the trenches of WW1. Orders were made to be followed.
