BIRCHFIELD BOUNCE BACK
BIRCHFIELD NARROWLY WIN MATCH AS THAMES VALLEY HOLD ON TO OVERALL LEAD
MARTIN DUFF
AFTER narrowly losing to Thames Valley Harriers in the opening match four weeks earlier, Birchfield turned the tables. But it was close, as the Stags won by half a point and the two league frontrunners will fight things out in the final match next month.
There was controversy after around a dozen athletes were deemed ineligible to compete in the opening match and their clubs, Enfield & Haringey and Shaftesbury Barnet, forfeited points and were demoted to the rear of the pack, although there could yet be appeals.
On the opening match, league scrutiniser Jan Lishman said: “There were a number of ineligible athletes taking part which has taken some time to unravel, including checks with England Athletics.”
Clubs were advised that the first match disqualifications were “still subject to appeal.”

Julia Cook (6): 800m win

Enfield’s Ray Gibbons seemed not to care, when he said of the disqualifications: “We are just here for the competition.”
TVH’s team manager Manuel Da Silva said: “They were told and they still ran them, but why did the league let them run?”
It is Thames Valley who now just head the division on match points and they pushed winners Birchfield all the way.
The Midlands outfit had six A-string victories to the Valley’s two, with their strength coming in the field, led by Sally Peake who set a women’s outright league record of 4.30m and with it earned a cheque for £150. She was unaware of the award and said: “I didn’t get that when I broke it two years ago (with 4.25m).”
