STAGING the marathon races is one of London 2017’s biggest challenges by far. They will not have to deal with the huge number of runners the annual London Marathon in April handles, but there are two championship marathons in one day held on a relatively short central London circuit at the height of summer.
Such are the complexities of putting the event on, London 2017 has dealt with 16 different authorities for the Tower Bridge area alone. That part of the capital is an iconic section which marks the halfway point in April’s London Marathon but for the IAAF World Championships it will provide a stunning backdrop for the start and finish of each race.
