The isolation you feel growing up as an LGBT+ person in a small town is overpowering. I felt alone and lost until I went to university in Leeds and the gay scene there saved me. But my first time at a gay bar was actually for a job interview — at Queens Court in Leeds.
I remember looking around as I walked through the door, keenly aware of the glances I was getting before I sat down opposite Simon, the bar manager. He asked me the first question: “Who’s your favourite singer?”
