Canelo continues to exhibit his improvement against plucky Jacobs, writes Matt Christie

SAUL “CANELO” ALVAREZ might be the best boxer in the sport but don’t hold your breath waiting for everyone to toast him as such. Too much has happened in the past, it seems, for the Mexican superstar to unite supporters in the way that dominant champions should. Too many unfathomable scorecards, too many infuriating catch-weight bouts loaded in his favour and, in the most difficult act to forgive, too many failed drug tests that resulted in too lenient a punishment.

But to ignore the flipside of Canelo Alvarez, the brilliant and intelligent boxer with a long list of illustrious victims, would not only be doing the fighter himself a disservice, but also the complexity of the sport he has mastered. Because mastered it he has, in nearly every way, from the loopholes in the system right through to the gruelling and almost impossible act of combat itself. Canelo, unquestionably, has had help along the way. However, his position at the top of the pile is not solely down to the legups he’s received; boxing is too tough a discipline to thrive on injustice alone. Similar controversies have wrecked the mentality of lesser athletes but Alvarez, as bullet-proof as they come, has ignored all criticism with the kind of fierce determination only afforded to a very special few. Screw you all, he says, as he carves out his legacy with a hammer and chisel stained with the sins of yesterday.
