Classic Bus  |  Jun/Jul 2020 (167)
Leyland had great hopes for its ‘let’s take on the best of Europe’ Royal Tiger Doyen coach. We reveal from The Bus Archive some of the research that went on to make sure it was a winner; only it wasn’t. Nor was AEC’s pre-war normal-control Ranger. Michael Dryhurst shows some of them off, particularly at West Country beauty spots on touring holidays.
In a previous Classic Bus, Jeremy Williams took us on a trip from Wigan to visit an aunt in New Brighton. Now we’re off to Blackpool to visit another aunt and see some great buses on the way!
Discover the lovely story of Pearl, a formidable conductress who started with London Transport Country Bus department during the war and continued right up to the early 1970s. We also look at an AEC Regent V in Darwen that actually wasn’t really an AEC at all. Alan Hiley recalls classic Trent coaches of the 1950s, and Rod Bramley reveals some close connections between the end of trolleybuses with Mexborough & Swinton and the end of those in Bradford 11 years later.
As always, there’s our usual lively and well-illustrated Forum section, with topics ranging far and wide, and an overview of new books of interest.
