While reporting at the Classic Motor Show late last year at the NEC, Birmingham, it was a great honour to be asked if I would be interested in editing Classic Plant & Machinery in the future. I helped to create the title for Kelsey Publishing some 13 year ago now and have edited the magazine twice before for a few issues, inbetween editors. I was also the title’s publisher until
2007. In fact, I think I have written in every issue, in some form or other since we kicked it off with the premier issue and have been involved in providing the news since it started. I’m not an expert on the subject, but have been involved in plant and road transport all my life and had my first trip on a Caterpillar in 1954, aged 2. I also stood on a steam roller that same year in Chris Lambert’s yard at
Horsmonden, Kent. This site was later to become Roe Roads yard. In fact, the Paddock Wood Rally in Kent even had a class for working steam rollers. CHILDHOOD Being a very hyperactive child, my
father, when he had time, and my uncle and grandfather, did their best to keep me amused. I had a great thirst for cement mixers from my blue Matchbox Toys to the real thing, which I loved finding and visiting especially if they were working. My appetite for such things was endless and living in a sleepy railway junction village didn’t help, so my frustration was taken out on my poor mother’s lawn with my Triang crane and Dinky Toy Euclid dumptruck, helping to move the earth and grass
elsewhere. I would be delighted to hear from you all and we are looking for writers old and new to the title who are keen on JCB and other British makes to enable these to be featured more in these pages, as well as anything else you can think of. If you would like to see different things in the magazine, please let us know. Contact details are on page 4. If you are at this year’s Great Dorset Steam Fair and you see me about – I’ll be wearing a Classic Plant & Machinery cap – do come
and say hello.
