Shaun Dooley played Epzo – Muxteran pilot and Rally of the Twelve Galaxies finalist – in The Ghost Monument. But that wasn’t his only creative contribution to Series 11…

Shaun Dooley and Jodie Whittaker are old friends.

“We’ve known each other way too long,” he says, laughing. “We’re both Yorkshire kids, you see. And we worked together in Broadchurch. I’m so pleased that the first time I got to do Doctor Who was this series, with Jodie.”

Shaun starred as the competitive Epzo in The Ghost Monument (2018). “Epzo is totally different from me,” he says, reflecting on the role. “Susan [Lynch, who played Angstrom] is actually more like Epzo than I am. I’d rather help the straggler win the race with me rather than dash on ahead. I’m more Shackleton than Scott, if you want to use history.”

Despite their differences, Shaun says he loved his character. “And I love Jodie’s Doctor too,” he adds. “My daughters were very excited to see Jodie as the Doctor. The other day, my six-year-old got herself dressed for school and she came down wearing a rainbow top and a long coat and said, ‘I’m dressed up as the Doctor.’ Two minutes later she’d cut up a piece of cardboard, put some tin foil round it and written on it ‘sonic’ and ‘screwdriver’ – both spelt wrong. She was using it to zap everything. And I thought, ‘When I was growing up there was no way young girls would’ve been dressing up as this hero on television.’ As the dad of three girls I love what this rebranding has done.”
