The experts behind the restoration of the Doctor Who Blu-ray box sets reveal some of the tricks of their trade.

I ncredibly, the painstaking work that goes into restoring the episodes on the acclaimed Doctor Who: The Collection Blu-rays is primarily the work of two people. “Peter Crocker does the pictures, I do the sound”, says Mark Ayres.

Releasing Doctor Who on Blu-ray was first discussed among the Doctor Who Restoration Team – whose members include Peter, Mark, Steve Roberts and Paul Vanezis – as the DVD range was coming to an end. “I think the idea at the time was that we might want to put out the episodes in standard definition on Blu-ray”, recalls Mark, “mainly because they would be considerably less compressed and the master tapes would look much better. But then the feeling was that the people buying the Blu-rays would expect them to be HD, not standard definition, so we would have to upscale.”
