Cinched or straight? You’ll have to consult the calendar. The battle of the silhouettes has been waging on for decades, swinging from laced-up corsetry to straight shifts, back to pin-up curves and all the way around again. Women’s bodies have long been a battleground, and fashion has an uncanny ability to mirror it right back to us.
So where does that leave us now? In the 2020s, both silhouettes seem to be making a bid for the crown. Case in point: Ms Prada, known to be able to intuit the wants of women better than many of her peers — perhaps by virtue of being one of the only female heads of a fashion house on the frontline — opted for cerebral, straight-line cuts for autumn/winter 2025, with cinches only in the loosest terms: paper bag waists, scrunched softly, without really interrupting the general line down.
