EMPIRE 2022 REVIEW
MOONFALL
DISASTER-MASTER ROLAND EMMERICH ON HIS MOON-VERSUS -EARTH OPUS
OUT 04 FEB
Rocky horror — anti-gravity shenanigans aplenty as the moon falls to Earth.
Disaster movies used to be a summerblockbuster staple, but you’re really maybe the only one making them these days with such big budgets. Why do you still love them?
First of all, I don’t like superheroes very much and because of that I have to come up with big scenarios. So, a flood in 2012, or aliens in Independence Day, climate change in The Day After Tomorrow. The interesting part of all that is that I’m always coming up with scenarios that are bigger than just the destruction, like small groups of people having to come together to survive. There’s always a bigger story behind it. And really, I just like these kinds of films, because it’s always a lot of characters to start with, then fewer and fewer of them. At the end it’s always someone very normal who survives. It’s always like the author of a book or something. I like that.
