Now is a good time to start if you would like to grow your own ginger plants.
They make a lovely foliage house plant or you can aim to harvest the roots if you can grow them on in heat.
Buy some roots from the greengrocer, selecting firm, fleshy pieces. The more knobbly f ingers they have, the better, because a new plant will emerge from each of these. Plant them into potting compost about 5cm deep.
The fingers can be separated to give them more space if you plan to grow them as a crop.
Water well then give them as much heat and light as you can. Water more as the foliage gets bigger.
