Mulch raised beds
Give the fertility and soil structure of your beds a boost by adding a layer of garden compost or wellrotted manure. There is no need to mix it in as that will be done for you by worms, ground beetles and your planting and gardening activities through the season.
The soil level of raised beds drops every year as the organic matter decomposes. This process is perfectly natural and even generates a little heat for the crops as they grow. The new compost provides slow-releasing nutrients, opens up dense clay soil and is important for improving moisture retention.
