H ANDS UP IF YOU’VE SCRUTINISED A MENU to the nth degree to find the healthiest low-calorie dish (maybe even gluten free and vegan), but then ordered an enormous glass of wine? But then, who wants to drink sparkling mineral water, sugary juices or diet cola all night? Surely there must be a healthy middle way? That light fruity glass of rosé or ice-cold beer are far from healthy if you overdo it – for two reasons most of us know very well: alcohol content and ‘empty’ calories. That’s why so many of us are thinking about healthier alternatives. Twenty million adults in the UK are now ‘happy to consider’ low or no-alcohol alternatives to booze, and the number of adults who don’t drink at all increased by 35% between 2013 to 2017, according to two surveys conducted by Kantar Worldside last summer. Estimates by Office of National Statistics put the figure of non-drinkers at one in five.
