Etymology is the study of the history and origin of words and the way they’ve changed throughout history. The word etymology itself comes from two Greek words: “étumon” (which means “true sense”), and “logia” (which means “study”). The origin of words can be fascinating.
Modern-day English words are from a variety of sources. Some come from people’s names. For example, a “sandwich” originates from John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich.
