MONTE CARLO WINNING STRATOS
The sound comes first, an angry bark more animal than mechanical that roils
around the Italian countryside. And then the Lancia Stratos HF that won the 1977 Monte Carlo Rally graces us with its presence. The four decades that have passed since that epic victory have dimmed none of the car’s brilliance. Even today its wedge-like shape looks positively futuristic. It’s hard to imagine just what an effect this, to borrow a line from The Carpenters interplanetary, most extraordinary craft would have had in a world populated by Ford Escorts and Vauxhall Chevettes. Harder still to reconcile that, by 1977, the Stratos itself was almost something of an oldtimer, having been unveiled in prototype guise way back in 1971 at the Turin motor show and having gone on to secure Lancia a hat-trick of World Rally Championships between 1974 and 1976.
