Over the last two years, many of us have spent more time at home than in any other period of our lives. Lockdowns have driven a boom in home improvements, as we seek to enhance our living spaces through extending, renovating, redecorating, gardening, or even just having a good clean and declutter. But with so much going on, and tradespeople in high demand, not everyone has been able to press ahead with their plans. So, if you’ve been holding off on starting a project, then why not make a resolution to get things underway in 2022? The new year is the ideal time to reflect and adjust priorities, and tends to fuel a burst of motivation, so take advantage of it. And, if you have been busy improving your home, then we’d love to see the results – get in touch by emailing periodliving@futurenet.com. If you’re planning to redecorate with a fresh palette this year, then be inspired by the colour of the moment – pale blue, which is just the most optimistic, calming shade that will lift your spirits on even the darkest days of winter. From page 22, we look at how to use it in every room of the home. Evocative of nature’s endless expanses - the sky and sea – pale blue will make you feel re-energised and renewed, and is the perfect colour for making a fresh start. Elsewhere in this issue, National Trust head gardener Rosie Fyles begins a fascinating new series looking at garden design through the eras (page 136). She offers expert insight into incorporating historical references into our own gardens, kicking things off with 17th century schemes, known for their formal topiary, specimen plants, and mix of key edible and medicinal varieties. We also celebrate the garden’s most uplifting flower – the snowdrop (page 143). As it breaks through the ground this month, savour it as a sign of brighter days ahead, and remember that spring will soon be here.
