THE Supreme Court’s clarification of the Equality Act – ruling that the words
man
and
woman
refer to biological sex – has exposed the failure of leadership by politicians and activist groups.
The big parties have drastically shifted their positions over the past five years, without ever explaining why they changed their minds, or apologising to those who got there a little earlier than them and were hounded and ostracised for it.
In the 2010s, when trans rights were presented as a cost-free way to show your empathetic credentials, politicians were in favour, in the same way one might support “world peace” or “the environment”. Both Theresa May as prime minister and Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader preened at the Pink News Awards as they soaked up praise for their enlightened views.
