DECLINING revenue from taxes on motoring will deepen the financial cuts for government departments in the June spending review, but chancellor Rachel Reeves is still turning a blind eye.
In her spring statement speech, Reeves referred to the independent Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) 19 times to create an impression that her figures were robust. But she avoided any mention of one particular tax – fuel duty – even though the OBR based its forecasts on the chancellor increasing duty on fuel by Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation each year and scrapping the temporary 5p-a-litre cut introduced in 2022.
