Wildlands

Wildlands is a lean arena-battler that trims off every unnecessary ounce from the thrill of wargaming – and it has Shadespire in its sights

BACK TO BASICS

Martin Wallace is one of the most revered game creators working today, known as much for the entrenched historical settings of games such as A Few Acres of Snow as he is for the complex strategy delights of Age of Steam and Brass.

Wildlands started life in a familiar mould for the former history teacher, after a company approached him to create a game where players could simulate battles between armies from different periods of time. The asymmetrical concept eventually turned out to be a little too lop-sided.

“You could have Romans against British infantrymen or you could have samurai against American GIs or something like that,” Wallace recalls. “I couldn’t get it to work because you’re always going to have one small, highly technical force against a mass of low-tech fighters – so you’re always going to have that imbalance. So I kind of thought let’s try and move it into an area where you’re only going to have five characters, or maybe they’re from different periods of time so you can balance things by saying we’re going to have warriors from different periods of time fighting on the same team. Then I don’t have to worry about those imbalances.”
