Colour plays an important part in Heidi Clawson’s work. ‘This painting,’ she says, ‘is one of a set that I painted using a limited palette. I used acrylic paints for the majority of this piece, working into the paint with scratching techniques, and scumbling, adding ink and applying paint with my fingers. I began by sketching onto the acrylic paper to get the compostion right before adding elements, such as the swirls of flowers in the striped vase, leaves and shadows. I work fast – mostly because I’m not very patient – and I like to see results quickly, working over the acrylic with inks to add details, outlines and crosshatching. The warm coral, orange and yellow tones give a fresh, contemporary feel to the painting alongside cooler greys and greens. ‘I’ve recently been using acrylics, but I also enjoy soft pastels, gouache, watercolour, inks and mixed media. One of my favourite techniques is using pieces of paper, brown paper or tissue paper, to add texture to the surface by painting over the top. I’m currently working on a series of paintings that include houses, and close-ups of interesting windows and doors.
‘I completed an honours degree in textiles at Manchester Metropolitan University after art college, then decided that constructed textile art really wasn’t for me! I enjoyed the paint and collage aspect much more so my art career took a different path. I began freelancing as a greetings card designer for companies such as Hallmark, and also designing childrens’ bedding and homeware for Europe and the USA through an agent. I worked in a printed textile studio mainly as a colour mixer which honed my colour skills; my Mum thinks there is magic at work when I can look at any colour and can tell exactly what shades to mix together to get the match! I ran a successful handmade homeware and gifts business with my husband from 2004, exhibiting at craft shows and Country Living in London until recently when we both decided to make changes and closed our workshop.
‘I wanted to get back to painting which I realised was my absolute passion and, finding I had more time now that our children are older, I can enjoy painting alongside running my online card and print business, Giddy Kipper.
