“We believe in miracles and make them happen”
We chat to Kim from Animal SOS Sri Lanka about the charity’s lifesaving work
In Midigama, Ahangama, in the southern area of Sri Lanka, there is a dedicated team of volunteers working tirelessly to save and rehabilitate the country’s animals. Animal SOS Sri Lanka provides important education to locals and vital veterinary services to improve the welfare of animals on the island.
Founded in 2007 by Kim Cooling, it became an operational charity in 2009. Kim had visited the island 20 years previously, and the horrific attitude and treatment of animals left her feeling that she had to do more. It took time to raise enough money to buy land, build a clinic and spaces for the animals to live in, but Kim’s ideas quickly became reality and Animal SOS Sri Lanka became fully functioning.
“We help any animal in desperate need, but mainly focus on the stray cats and dogs. They suffer terribly and die agonising deaths from injuries on the roads, disease, infected wounds and abuse from humans,” says Kim. “We have also helped monitor lizards, monkeys, porcupines, birds and squirrels,” she adds. The team are currently caring for 1,500 dogs and 60 cats, and 350 of those animals have special needs — this includes animals that are blind, with both mental and physical disabilities, elderly animals and orphaned puppies and kittens. “All of our residents have horrific stories, but we give them security and a safe haven at the sanctuary and that is what they need most,” Kim says.
